Getting Lost In a Steel Maze

Artists Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout van Verenbergh of Gijs Van Vaerenbergh designed a huge maze with five-meter-tall steel corridors at the C-MINE Art Centre in Genk, Belgium. Around a kilometer of pathways of this installation are surrounded by steel panels booleaned to create huge geometric shapes that cut through the entire structure.

Labyrinth comprises tunnels and corridors that unveil unexpected perspectives of large portions of the composition and help visitors better orient themselves. Differently-shaped voids and cut-outs create surprising views of the steel walls that transform the idea of a maze from a structure that focuses on horizontality and corners into a true three-dimensional experience. Parts of the installation are reminiscent of vaulted cathedral ceilings, halls of mirrors and art installations.

Walls reveal other parts of the structure and create a spatially exciting environment. Viewed from certain perspectives, the cut-outs look fragmented, while from other points visitors can see the entire shape. Labyrint also interacts with the C-mine by allowing visitors to ascend the old mine shafts and have a look at the entire structure from above. This perspective is generally reserved for the creator of the project.

Sandworm

Sandworm is an organic structure/space/creature realized on the dunes of the Wenduine coastline, Belgium. The 45 meters long and 10 m wide and high installation moves freely in-between architecture and environmental art and is constructed entirely out of willow following the local knowledge of a continuing interaction between work and environment. Marco Casagrande worked hard with his team of young architects and local experts for 4 weeks in order to create something that he describes as “weak architecture” – a human made structure that wishes to become part of nature through flexibility and organic presence.

Bram Bogart

A Dutch/Belgian artist I love is Bram Bogart whose pieces are full of bold color and texture (inspired by the movement/furrow of the soil after it has been prepared for planting). Simple, powerful, and beautiful!

We always think that a painting is ahead of its time.
This is not true, it’s the public that is behind the times.
The painter is always influenced by his time, at the moment he lives.

Aluminum Plane by Frederic Geurts

The Aluminum Plane by Frederic Geurts is gigantic. It measures 17,5 meter by 4 meters and the sheet is 3 mm thick. Frederic only had a paper scale model before he folded this on location. It’s part of his (un)balanced exhibition at z33 in Hasselt, Belgium.

BRIDGE by Michael Cross

‘Bridge’ by Michael Cross at Z33.

The Bridge is a series of steps which rise up out of the water in front of you as you walk from one to the next, and then disappear back underneath behind you as you go, leaving you stranded with only one step visible in front of you, and one behind. The bridge ends in the middle of the water, where you find yourself totally isolated and cut off from the shore. You return the way you came. The mixed feelings of peace, isolation, relaxation and fear that the piece elicits are powerful. The project is on-going will ultimately lead to a permanent installation in a lake.

Hunting & Gathering in Brussels ...

Hunting and Collecting in Brussels is the work of former fashion editor Aude Gribomont and event producer Niels Radkte, who have pooled their creative talents and love of fashion, art, and design in the creation of this concept store. Blurring the line between art gallery and store, Gribomont and Radkte feature a heady mix of rotating artists in a nod to our global, nomadic culture. Their Online Store is equally innovative.

The Upside (Down) Dome

"When visiting the St Michiel Church in Leuven, one might overlook that the church has no dome. Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh build an installation that takes this seemingly trivial fact as a starting point and generate the missing dome in a remarkable way. The installation casts light on the architecture of one of the most prestigious baroque churches of the Low Countries from a contemporary perspective. Using the design technique of the catenary, a new structure emerges in the church. The Upside Dome is a real size scale model, comprised of hundreds of meters of chain, which is literally and figuratively the counterpart of the unfinished dome. Pieterjan Gijs (1983) and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh (1983) studied both architecture and work together under the name Gijs Van Vaerenbergh in a multidisciplinary practice with an important focus on public space."
