Vincent Van Duysen KITCHENS

In addition to designing suavely minimalist residential and commercial projects, Antwerp-based architect Vincent Van Duysen has designed earthenware bowls for When Objects Work and cascading crystal chandeliers for Swarovski. We especially admire his kitchens; see more of his work at Vincent van Duysen.

John Pawson for Demeyere

UK architect John Pawson’s rigorously streamlined pots and pans for Belgian company Demeyere (even the mission statement is minimalist: “The Man, The Work, The Pan”). According to Pawson, “A pan might seem like a very straightforward object to design, but the reality is that smallness of scale does not equate with lack of complexity. The union of form and function must be seamless. My goal has been something which looked different, but right, equally at home over a flame or on a table— modern but not modish.” The collection is available from Bloomingdales.

Why are Belgian designers and architects so good at creating dark, moody spaces? Justin at Materialicious is a master at sourcing projects from European architects — both established and emerging. Here’s a roundup of kitchens we’ve collected from his site (and other sources).
